Voices from above made them both go still and quiet. |

"They couldn't have disappeared. They're hiding somewhere." |

"Come on, Halloran. Let's get back inside. They'll still be here to kill in the morning. In this storm no one could get back to town without a car." |

"Shit. This is a waste of time." Halloran must have stopped right at the top of the trail; his voice drifted down to them quite clearly. Chris had a sudden vision of the ground beneath Halloran's feet giving way as it had moments before beneath Chris's own. Then the man who stalked them would land in their laps, and their lives would be measured in seconds. A quick glance at D.J.'s white face told Chris she'd had the same thought. He reached for her hand, taking her icy, stiff fingers into his equally cold palm. |

The voices receded in the direction from which they'd come, and Chris breathed easier. He looked at D.J., who'd closed her eyes in relief. When she opened them he smiled at her. She smiled backa bit shaky, but a smile nonetheless. |

"The trail's washed out." |

"Really? I didn't notice." |

She rolled her eyes at his sarcasm. "There's one other way out of here, and that's the trail in front of the cabin." |

"I don't think so. I've had enough of Rich Halloran for the night." |
